Winter Weather Brings Snow and Flooding to South Africa

Winter Weather Brings Snow and Flooding to South Africa

After the weather events that took place in the Western Cape in the middle of last week, focus shifted towards the interior and the eastern coastal areas for the weekend. As we discussed in our previous article we posted last week, we had our eyes on a low pressure that was forecast to develop towards the north eastern parts of the country, where models were predicting heavy rains and impressive snowfalls through much of Lesotho and into the Eastern Cape, as well as parts of KZN.

Reports of heavy snow came in early as Saturday, with social media lighting up with images being shared of thick snow accumulation in areas, which would end up continuing throughout the day and into Sunday.

While the interior was seeing impressive snowfalls, the eastern coastal regions were dealing with extremely heavy rainfall leading to flooding in several areas. Port Elizabeth was particularly hard hit, and the intense rainfall lead to the Baakens River breach its banks. We’ve put together a collection of relevant images to portray the weekend in summary, for those looking to catch up.
