After a fairly dry summer it seems as though winter is knocking on the door, there have been a few weak fronts pushing through as well as a cut-off low during the second last week of April. This system brought some thundershowers to the Western Cape and Eastern Cape regions with several squall lines developing. Though none of the Western Cape thunderstorms became very severe it was reported that there was some hail present with a strong squall line which had a dBz radar reading of 60. Usually present with large hail. Looking ahead the first strong cold fronts look to be pushing through the Western Cape starting Wednesday-Thursday bringing showers for 3-4 days with some fairly decent rainfall totals expected exceeding 10mm in 24 hours in places. This will be a welcome relief for Western Cape dams which levels have been slowly dropping. There is a small chance of thundershowers for Thursday, but really nothing worth mentioning, I'd place the probability at around 5-7% at present. This is due to an upper trough. So get those umbrellas, blankets and hot chocolate out, temperatures are going to reach maximums of only 16 degrees or less in places. |
